HELPFUL INFORMATION

Your portrait session should be a reflection of your family. I will do my best to capture those moments; the important thing is to be yourself and have fun!

Preparation and communication are super important to a successful portrait session, so make sure to share all your ideas and concerns in advance.

LOCATION: Finding the perfect location is an important part of planning for your family session. I have lots of favorite places, and can make recommendations based on your personality and style.  As Utah county photographer, i've explored many amazing location near me but I always welcome your location ideas. i've  I'd love to know if there is a place that is sentimental to your family so we can discuss our options and plan the best location to suit your family. An important thing to watch out for when considering your location is how much shade we have to work with. Bright sun creates all sorts of problems (glare, harsh shadows and so on) that can't be fixed.

WHEN: Most of the time I schedule my sessions in the evenings. In my opinion evening gives the perfect soft lighting. If there is perfect cloud cover then it doesn't really matter what time of day but, Utah weather is super unpredictable so it's best to plan for evening pictures

CLOTHING: This family session is meant to capture your family, including individuality and style. Helpful tips to keep in mind when choosing outfits:

  • Think coordinating, not matching. Try to incorporate colors and patterns that fit well together.

  • Don't be afraid of color. Choose a few neutrals and then add a few bright accents to your outfits. Accessories such as scarves, necklaces, and clothing layers are great for this.

  • Avoid bold patterns, florescent colors, words and large logos. Florescent colors will reflect on your skin which won't be flattering.

  • Wear well fitting clothing. Not too tight, and nothing baggy. Remember you'll be put into different poses so If you can't walk in those pants, don't wear them.

CHILDREN: Get your kids excited for the session and let them know how much fun it will be. No need to over prepare them or add to much pressure for "best behavior". Make sure that you are calm and relaxed, this can sometimes be stressful for you so do your best. Kids pick up on your stress, so stay cool, even when they throw a tantrum. Our goal is to capture their true expressions, and keeping it light and fun is essential to that. Best behaved children (and husbands for that matter) are usually those that are well fed before your session. Feel free to bring treats to reward good behavior during our session.

PROPS: I love props and I have some that I can bring with me. Stools, old chairs, cool Victorian furniture, quilts and blankets are always welcomed. Let's talk about it before the photo shoot.
